St. Jude – Brizo #Blogger19 Reunion Recap – Enlightening Day 1

As you know over the last few weeks have been a whirlwind of enjoyable, enlightening and memorable times traveling to Memphis, Tennessee with Brizo Faucet July 16-18th 2013 for the #Blogger19 Reunion. Last year when I went to New York City for Fashion Week and the Jason Wu Fashion Show I compiled my 3 day experience into one post.

After last year, I said the next time I would break up the posts, because there is just too much to talk about and Brizo love’s to jam pack a lot of activities into the day & I love to share it all with you!

What a wonderful experience Day 1 was as you can see almost 80 of us from the Blogger 19 seasons.

Day 1 – St. Jude Children’s Hospital

Today I want to talk about Day 1 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – one of the most enlightening experiences of my life to date. To my Stagetecture readers who already know about the amazing research, guidance, housing, and medical treatments they give to children with cancer and their families, then you already know the magnitude of this charitable hospital.

StJudeExterior-Stagetecture_Brizo

Morning Breakfast Buffet

The morning started off with us meeting many of the St. Jude staff, being welcomed by the Brizo team and enjoying a delicious breakfast.

St Judes_Blogger 19 Reunion Presentation_Stagetecture

Here we learned about how the late entertainer Danny Thomas  founded St. Jude opened in 1962. His mission was to find cures for children with cancer and other deadly disease through pioneering research exceptional care to children worldwide.

The most eye-opening facts were that no child/family has to pay for their care at St. Jude. All of the expenses are covered by donations, public contributions. The daily operating costs for St. Jude is 1.7million dollars a day! – Truly amazing

All meals, medical treatments, on-site family housing in the Target House (if needed), physical therapy and more are 100% covered, so the families can concentrate on their child and family getting well.

St Judes_Blogger 19 Reunion_Table Setting_Stagetecture

For me it was an eye-opening experience in many ways. Here are just a few of the facts that I learned about St. Jude Children’s Hospital:

Patient Focused:

The Child Life Program which works to minimize anxiety of patient families and provide engaging activities for patients, pay a part it all design and construction decision throughout the hospital and the Target House.

Patient Design Ideas:

Patient and parent inout in considered in all building, layout and design plans because St. Jude want all design aspects to grab people’s attention and increase patient engagement and comfort.

Teens Count:

A long hallway in the hospital has been transformed into an art gallery for their teenage patients. Every year there is an art show to unveil their new artwork. Additionally they have their own Teen Room where they gather to use computers, video games, pool table and get to just be teens!

After breakfast we broke up into two groups. One to tour the Target House for families who stay at St. Jude and the other group to the hospital tour.

Target House

stjude-and-targethouse

The Target Houses I and II are family housing like nothing you have ever seen. They provide extended stay solutions for families that need longer term medical assistance and enable the family to still have all of the “comforts of home”.

TargetHouse2_St Jude_Brizo_Stagetecture
Target House II Living Room

“There’s no place in the world quite like Target House—a multimillion dollar gift from Target Stores. While nothing can completely replace the comfort of home, Target House comes close by providing a magnificent community of fully equipped, two-bedroom apartments in a beautiful setting just minutes from St. Jude. Here, families who need to be at St. Jude from 90 days to up to three years or more have privacy, independence, and support.

To make their stay more pleasant, all residents can enjoy spectacular communal amenities such as the Tiger Woods Library, Scott Hamilton Family Fitness Center and Parents’ Spa, Amy Grant Music Room, and Scott Hamilton Arts and Crafts Room.

Target House is more than a place to stay. It’s a haven where children and their families derive compassion, comfort, and strength from other family’s struggles and victories. In a difficult time, Target House is a place to live, heal, and rejoice as a family.“

Then it was time to tour St. Jude Children’s Hospital and engage with some of the children.

St. Jude Children’s Hospital Tour

When you go into many children’s hospitals – the sterile environment, the chemical smell and often times the lack of inspiring colors doesn’t make you feel very happy. What a welcoming surprise it was to go inside the St. Jude hospital. They have taken considerable time and consideration into thinking of the aesthetics and experience for the children and their families.

St Jude Children’s Hospital hallway

Here’s what I learned about their “Artful Solutions” in design:

Impact of Color & Thoughtful Design

The environment is a huge influence on a child’s health and happiness. By incorporating bright colors, natural lights, specialty designed murals that look like in-patient children help create an environment the children enjoy being in.

Fun with the St. Jude children

Later that day we enjoyed crafts and activities with the children. My group played with individual dollhouses that the kids could change out the wallpaper, carpet, furniture and more! It was so much fun.

Reliving the Magic: Brizo’s Blogger 19 Reunion – July 2013

I was ecstatic when I received the ‘Save the Date’ invitation from Brizo faucets early this year for a reunion for the ‘The Blogger 19’ Brizo members. If you’ve been with Stagetecture for awhile you already know in Feb 2012 I was invited to New York City along with 18 others to attend New York Fashion Week and see fashion designer – Jason Wu’s fall collection. The three days were a blur of excitement, anticipation and to get a peek inside Brizo faucets commitment to excellence in bringing gorgeous plumbing fixtures to your bathroom and kitchen was unforgettable.

I’m Invited to NYC for Sandra Lee’s Summer Carnival with Sears/Kmart!

 Entry #1109, April 20, 2012

Yesterday I received the greatest surprise in the mail! A pretty polka dotted box with an invitation, a hand signed invitation, and oven mitt from Sandra Lee! Sandra has paired up with Sears and Kmart to announce her new line of home goods entitled Sandra by Sandra Lee.

I have been a huge fan of Sandra Lee since watching her on the Food Network and loving her show “Semi-Homemade” concept of “70/30” rule. 70 percent store bought foods and 30 percent custom touches to make your dishes look and taste gourmet without the gourmet price.

“Food Network star and New York semi-first lady Sandra Lee has just signed a licensing agreement with Sears and Kmart on a new line of home goods entitled Sandra by Sandra Lee. The line, due to hit stores in spring 2012, will include cookware, bakeware, small kitchen appliances, and tabletop items, much like Giada de Laurentiis’s home line for Target. “Launching my first ever, complete collection of home products with Sears and Kmart is a wonderful opportunity to help their customers live their lives beautifully and simply,” says Lee. “I have waited a long time to find the right retail partner—one that would be able to execute my vision for the brand.” … via Curbed

Entry #961, February 17, 2012

February 8-11th 2012 marks an experience that I will never forget. Me and 18 other bloggers, designers and architects, also known as the ‘Blogger 19’ joined the few that have experienced Brizo’s commitment to quality, design and hospitality at New York City’s Fashion Week.

From the moment I arrived in New York and was greeted by the driver to leaving and arriving back in Jacksonville, Florida it was top notch all the way.

It is hard to compile a snapshot of what occurred because it was multi-dimensional in the experience. From the 18 other great design folks I met, to the wonderful hospitality by the Eventi Hotel staff, to the learning the Brizo brand and where they seek design inspiration, it’s impossible for me to bottle it into words that will even scratch the surface.

Instead, I will do a re-cap of the events we enjoyed, and try to sprinkle in my fondest memories of each part throughout!

Day 1: Brizo Welcome Reception

The first night in New York City we all got to meet each other. Which I have to say is a treat in itself! Since I have turned from Associate Architect sitting in an office all day to Professional Blogger, it is no nice to meet your ‘virtual co-workers’! I am on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media with the other 18 and meeting each of them face to face was wonderful. It was also our first time to meet the Brizo team and the wonderful folks who make this event possible.

Day 2:  – Brizo Product Session

The second day was a whirlwind of Brizo products, and it was interesting to see where much of the inspiration of the gorgeous designed faucets originated from. Judd Lord, showed each of the bath and kitchen suites and walked us through how he and his team come up with concepts that later make their way to your home.

Charlotte Shower
It was fascinating to learn about the design inspiration behind the products

One of the most interesting parts of the day was an interactive session with the Brizo team. We were asked to give honest feedback on products that are in the design concept stage. We even had a sneek peek into prototype concepts that may come out in the next 18 months or into the future. It was a pleasure to see a brand take an interest into the designer’s opinions, and ask for honest feedback as to whether our clients, and geographic locale would appreciate their products.

I think I speak for all of the other attendees that the information we learned from Brizo was invaluable. Learning about their testing methods, quality assurance methods, and attention to detail in every product was definitely a pleasure to witness.

Interactive Cooking Session at Sur La Table

In the evening we were driven by limousines to Sur La Table. A delightful kitchen ware store that featured culinary finds, and a great cooking class area! We were taught how to cook 3 different pastas, and it was so much fun to get a little dirty, and cook with our fellow design bloggers and Brizo team.

After that it was time to head back to the hotel and rest up for Friday… the biggest day of all!

Day 3: Brizo Champagne Brunch | Jason Wu Fashion Show & After Party

Day 3 had finally arrived and the anticipation of the day unfolding was like a child on Christmas morning before you get to open your gifts! The morning started off with a round table champagne brunch in the morning. This was an opportunity for the Brizo team to pick our brains about working with bloggers, similar brand events we had attended, and how they’d like to keep the relationship going with us and ultimately you, our readers.

I find that many brands don’t do this enough. It was also nice to hear other bloggers and designers speak to their specific readers, and clients and hear what others in this industry are doing to pair up with home brands.

After the brunch we all received our invitations to the Jason Wu Fashion show. What was a huge surprise is each of us got a signed lithograph from Jason, and a keychain with Jason’s iconic owl and Brizo Baroque flower from the inspiration of his powder room collection. I had to rush to my room and take a picture!

Next it was time for us to get dressed an meet in the lobby for photos. Here’s a few of my favorites 🙂

The fashion show was indescribable! It was set in this warehouse building that had a very industrial feel, and after the show started, it fit the military, Chinese-inspired, theme of Jason Wu’s designs perfectly. There were these huge red doors that opened up and out spilled light and mist, and powerful music was like a hip military regiment! It was awesome!

After Party for Jason Wu

As if that wasn’t enough, later on in the evening we headed to a penthouse overlooking New York City for an intimate chat with Jason Wu and we were able to hear him speak about his design inspirations, his gratitude for partnering with Brizo, and his commitment to quality and good design.

If I had 200 more pages, I could include every event, every picture, and every wonderful moment that I took away from this experience. Meeting the other designers and bloggers, learning about Brizo and attending the Jason Wu event was a girl’s dream come true.

I’m honored to be included in the ‘Blogger 19’. I thank all of my Stagetecture readers, Facebook fans, Twitter followers, friends and family for sharing in this experience with me. For it was exciting by myself, but what is an amazing experience until you can share it? Absolutely nothing.

Thank you again, and I look forward to building more relationships and learning about Brizo and Delta Faucets as I head into the future!
